Postponement of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: a brief comment of EUBC President
24 March 2020Dear Boxing Friends,
The decision to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to 2021 is correct and expected by the whole world of Olympic sport. IOC President Thomas Bach and the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had showed courage and determination to avoid that uncertainty could have repercussions on the psychological conditions of the athletes, on the training programs, but also on the economic investments that the National and International Federations, the Olympic Committees, the Governments and the National Sports Institutions allegedly addressed for Olympic preparation.
The timeliness of the choice of the Japanese government and the IOC must therefore be thanked for this act of responsibility and respect for the whole Olympic movement.
As soon as this terrible pandemic is beaten with the weapons of science, the civic sense and responsible behavior of the population, we will resume with the same optimism of the will and the same enthusiasm to achieve a universal Olympics and fulfill the dreams of our athletes.
As Vice President of AIBA, in the meantime I would like to express a wish: to see our International Federation readmitted among the Olympic Federations and to be ready to continue its glorious past in organizing the Olympic Games.
Franco Falcinelli
EUBC President
