A conversation with Artur Samvel Gevorgyan, today President of the Boxing Federation of Armenia and Deputy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia09 February 2018
Interview with Artur Samvel Gevorgyan, today President of the Boxing Federation of Armenia and Deputy of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.
He was also a brave boxer.
What is your program for this Olympic Cycle 2017/2020?
After 2016 Rio Olympic Games, the National team has been quite updated because our Olympians are trying to cooperate with a professional ring and try to make money. And taking into consideration that we have a pretty good team, the federation did not mind their decision to move to professional boxing.
Until 2020, we plan to restore the tradition of holding international tournaments. In case of possibility, we are ready to hold the Olympic Ranking Tournament in our country.
In the last years how much has your boxing movement improved?
The development of box is evident in our country. In my first year of running the federation, for the first time in Armenian history we had a young girl World Champion in the 51kg weight category and a boy bronze medalist in the 91kg weight category. By the way, our boxer in the 91kg weight category occupies prize-winning places both in youth and adult championships from 2014 to the present day.
For the first time in the history of Armenian boxing, we had 5 Olympic tickets, which had quite impressive fights in the Olympic Games and lost in equal fights.
Since 2010 we have finally won the European Championship and World Championship bronze medal in 2017, which is quite promising for the 2020 Olympic Games.
Is women’s boxing improvement in your country?
It cannot be said that women’s boxing is on the rise, but after Anush Grigoryan’s victory in 2014 World Championship interest towards women’s boxing has greatly increased. Many young girls, impressed by Anush Grigoryan’s success, followed her and entered the ring.
After Aiba opening to professional boxing, how will you improve this area?
After opening AIBA professional league, it is a pity, but because of the lack of financial resources we could not become a member of the professional league club and we were unable to open our own club. Our athletes are not often invited to other clubs. I have some ideas about AIBA professional boxing, but I think it’s too early to make it public. But we’d better discuss some issues with AIBA leaders and have an opportunity to be heard and to express our ideas about AIBA Professional League’s activities.
How are the dealing with the fight against doping? What are the measures adopted by the Boxing Federation of Armenia?
Doping controls are in the center of our attention. Even RA championships are always under control. Each year on our initiative doping seminars are held with coaches and athletes by the “Republican Center of Sports Medicine and Doping Service” operating under the Olympic Committee.
By the way, our federation since the first year of my leadership, besides doping seminars, organizes coaching and referee trainings and exams in every way trying to keep them informed of the events taking place in boxing and promoting new skills and knowledge. Such exams are held under our supervision, and the federation gives them certificates that they have taken and successfully passed our courses.
Your role in Parliament can contribute to the improvement of the Armenian Government’s attention on boxing?
It happened so that I am the only Olympian in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia and in every way I try to do everything possible not only for the boxers, but for all athletes to have a certain status and be in the center of the government’s attention, and after their graduation not have problems with employment. As a participant of 2 Olympic Games and a favourite boxer, I have a special respect towards my personality both from the President of the country and from the Prime Minister which is beneficial for the development of boxing in Armenia.
