A conversation with Mr. Sherzod Tashmatov, Executive Vice-President of Uzbekistan Boxing Federation and member of AIBA EC Vice-President of Asian Boxing Confederation

The results obtained by the Uzbekistan boxers demonstrate that you are not only the first country in Asia in terms of boxing technical results but among the first in the world. What contributed to these excellent results?

Indeed, in recent years we have achieved significant results in international and continental competitions. I would like to mention only some of them: the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016 – 3 gold medals, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, team first place, Asian championship 2017 – 9 gold medals and the last championship in Hamburg – 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Of course, we should note here the excellent results of our junior and youth teams too. Undoubtedly, to achieve this result, we had to carry out not just a lot of work, but also completely rebuild and rearrange all our Federation’s activities. We fundamentally changed the organizational structure of the Federation, fully updated the coaching staff, established cooperation with all branches of our Federation in the regions for the purpose of careful selection among young talented athletes, and strengthened the material and technical base of the Federation, and many other smaller but no less important things.

And this was achieved in a very short period of time – I came to the Federation in November 2014, just one and a half years before the start of the Olympic games  in Rio.

In your country boxing activity is carried out already at school level and then can practice boxing from an early age. Do you have special support by school Institutions?

In our country, to select the most talented and prodigy young men and girls, a three-stage system of republican competitions has been established. This system covers schoolchildren, students of colleges and lyceums and high institutions students. Such a built-in scheme, a priority state policy, based on the formation of a healthy generation, the improvement of the nation, could not but affect the results of selection of young talents – one of the most important components of the federation work. Also in our competitions calendar the regional tournaments for children and teenagers were included, and as a result of which prospective athletes from the various regions of the country appeared.

Youth boxing agonistic activity is carried out only through private clubs or even through national centers?

Today, there are not so many private boxing clubs in our country, so we focus on developing boxing in regional sports centers and halls that cover most of the country. The government of Uzbekistan has done a lot to make sports not only attractive to all segments of the population, but also quite available, including from a material point of view. The Federation, from its side, tries to help and support such centers and halls with sport and boxing equipment, special sport uniform and others. This is a complex task, which is solved by joint efforts.

In Uzbekistan there is only one Federation for amateur and pro boxing or there are two separate Federations?

Our Federation operates and develops boxing under the auspices of AIBA. But in the country there is the independent Federation of professional boxing.

Is planned, in your Olympic project for Tokyo 2020, the preparation also of pro boxers affiliated to various international pro organizations or there are only amateur boxers?

Our Federation operates quite openly, transparently and democratically. Our doors are open to all lovers of this sport. Any athlete who shows good sport results falls into the sphere of our interests. For our part, we create modern conditions for the training process, which encompasses also the provision of class coaches, fully equipped boxing halls, balanced meals, careful medical supervision, pharmacological support, participation in international sports competitions and many others. Of course, sportsmen who became the member of our teams, of course, strictly require sports discipline, professional approach to their sports activity and complete dedication during the training process. This mutual and useful cooperation gives good results on the major boxing starts.
