AIBA Appoints New Members for Scientific Commission
29 January 2015The International Boxing Association (AIBA) President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, has made the final appointments on the members of a new Scientific Commission. The role of the Scientific Commission will be to ensure that boxing continues to develop scientific and medical related new initiatives to further protect the safety of boxers and enhance the level of our competitions by embracing
the spirit and values of the Olympic Movement.
Dr David McDonagh, who has also been serving as the Vice Chairman of AIBA Medical Commission has been appointed the Chairman. He has vast scientific and medical experience, particularly as Advisor to the Organizing Committees of seven Olympic
Games, Assistant Chief Medical Officer at the Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games and Co-Editor of the IOC Manual of Event Planning and Emergency Care.
For the four Members,
- Dr David Zideman – Co-Author of the IOC Manual of Emergency Care, Head of Emergency Services London 2012, Advisor to the IOC on Emergency Services Rio 2016;
- Prof. Lyle Micheli – Harvard Medical School, President of the American College of Sports Medicine, Co-Author of the IOC Consensus paper on “Training the Elite Child Athlete”;
- Prof. Martin Schwellnus – University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria, Member of IOC Medical & Scientific Group, Director of IOC Centre of Excellence Cape Town;
- Prof. Joseph Cummiskey – Member of the IOC Medical & Scientific Group, former President of the European Federation of Sports Medicine Associations.
Their knowledge and experience will help ensuring that the highest scientific standards will be applied in all AIBA Competitions and further development of our sport.
