A practical test in the Ringside Drs workshop

With the 2013 World Boxing Championships due to kick off in less than a few minutes AIBA is pleased to announce that 27 Ringside Doctors have become officially qualified members of the AIBA medical team for this coming year, with several new participants passing their workshop and examinations last week in Assisi, Italy. The workshop ran from the 6th to the 11th of October and the timing was pivotal to furnish AIBA Doctors with the latest medical information prior to the largest boxing tournament in the world this year. EUBC President Franco Falcinelli paid the participants a visit during the Course.

Some of the new AIBA Open Boxing (AOB) rules such as the removal of the headguard formed important areas of discussion for AIBA’s Ringside Doctors at this most recent workshop and offering the participants specialist education and insights into the latest medical research was deemed highly important by the AIBA Medical Commission.

Overall the workshop itself was a huge success on both a professional and social level, with the doctors learning a tremendous amount and sharing their knowledge with each other. We asked some of them for their feelings on the value of the workshop and their responses are provided below:

Dr. Jean Louis LLOUQUET from France, AIBA Commission member
A member of the medical jury for the 2013 World Championships
“I have been involved in boxing for 25 years with AIBA. During the workshop, pictures and video practical explanations helped support the theory sessions. It is interesting to share and understand AIBA principles for Ringside Doctors with each other”.

Dr. Robert McKittrick M.D from USA, new participant
“I have been involved in boxing since the age of 14, and have been a ringside doctor for Amateur and professional fights for about 12 years. The workshop was excellent. Firstly, it helped to standardize medical examination and treatments around the world. The standardization of medical treatment for our sport is the single most important thing as part of ensuring the safety of our athletes as one of our primary needs.

Secondly, it is wonderful to meet and share experiences with new friends from the boxing world.
The medical experience of the participants was very impressive and it helped me to see our profession through their eyes”.

On the removal of headgear in the Almaty 2013 World Championships:
“Facial cuts may increase but I believe severe injuries will decrease. Often boxers depend on their headgear rather than technique”, [as in with correct technique boxers will seek to avoid shots to the head, rather than falsely trusting the headguard to absorb the impact].

Dr. Deborah Ann STEPHENS-JOHN from Grenada, new participant
“I have worked as a ringside doctor in boxing for the last 6 years since 2007. The AIBA Ringside Doctors workshop was informative and interactive. The instructors are trying very hard to ensure that the doctors are clear about the material. I have learned so much. Apart from AIBA Rules for boxing as a sport, learning about the mechanisms that cause head injuries stands out most to me”.

On the removal of headgear in the Almaty 2013 World Championships:
“I believe that initially there may be some sensitivity to this by the public at large, but as a Ringside Doctor with a clear understanding of how head injuries come about, I find the change quite easy to accept. This should be passed on to the coaches, boxers and National Federations”.

Overall opinion
“The workshop was well organized and the material was presented in a manner that could be quickly understood. It would be good if a similar workshop could be done somewhere in the Americas where doctors in that region could benefit from it”.

Dr. Alex Neverkovich from Russia, AIBA commission member
Medical jury member for the 2013 World Championships
“I have worked in AIBA for over 7 years. The workshop contents and programs are really useful, and for me personally I gained a lot of information about impact related fractures of the neck, ear injuries and cut cases. There was a good healthy discussion at all times, so I gained lots of experience and insight from other doctors”.

On the removal of headgear in the Almaty 2013 World Championships:
“I believe that without headgear, boxing will become more attractive and technical. The number of serious injuries will not increase due to this change”.

Dr. Barbarito GUTIERREZ CABRERA, AIBA Commission member
Medical jury member fo ther World Championships
“I have been involved with boxing for over 25 years. As a Ringside Doctor, I work for the health and safety of the boxers. I am completely happy with the removal of head gear and I will continue supporting and working for boxing. I am also very happy to have been a part of this workshop”.
