Aleksandrov vs Mohammadpour set to produce frenetic Flyweight fury in Bulgaria
18 July 2015The first two AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) Cycle I Round 2 Flyweight (52 kg) matches will emanate from Sofia, Bulgaria on Saturday night, as hometown hero Aleksandar Aleksandrov (BUL) faces Sajad Mohammadpour (IRI) in the headline bout.
Bulgaria’s Aleksandrov reached the quarter-finals of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but his performance against Redouane Asloum (FRA) in Cycle I Round 1 was one of the best of his entire career, after his focused attacks and tight defence resulted in a well-deserved victory.
Mohammadpour produced one of the biggest shocks of Round 1 when he clinically defeated AIBA World Championships silver medalist Mohamed Flissi in his APB debut.
Although only 22-years-old, the Iranian did not look fazed in the slightest in his inaugural match in this competition where his tireless work rate impressed many onlookers.
Both boxers met before at the 2014 Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia where Mohammadpour sensationally defeated the Bulgarian by split decision.
Their rematch in APB will take place over eight rounds, a distance which Aleksandrov completed very comfortably against Asloum.
This will be an intriguing battle between a smart, tactical fighter with over a decade of experience against a young sensation who is eager to claim another significant scalp in the premier boxing competition.
Another wonderful Flyweight match takes place in Sofia as Mohamed Flissi (ALG) and Redouane Asloum (FRA) both need a vital victory to move up the rankings.
