#APB Pre Ranking Phase 1 – Erik Pfeifer makes APB history with Inaugural Title victory in Baku23 January 2015
Both Germany’s Erik Pfeifer and Morocco’s Mohammed Arjaoui were 3-0 in AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) coming into their APB Inaugural Title Match, and Baku, Azerbaijan’s Sarhadchi Complex was the location for their Championship shootout.
After eight engrossing rounds, it was the German two-time AIBA World Championships bronze medalist Pfeifer who was crowned Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Champion.
4-0 in APB started the contest well, with his punches landing more sharply and accurately than his African opponent.
The first two rounds went to the German, before Arjaoui (3-1) exploded into life, and an aggressive third round was given to the Moroccan.
However, the momentum swung back Pfeifer’s way in the fourth and fifth rounds, as his crisp punches and movement began to tire Arjaoui.
With everything at stake, the African athlete fought back hard in the sixth round, and took the frame decisively to give him some hope going into the Championship rounds.
It was to be the last round he would win in the fight despite his best efforts, as Pfeifer’s extra energy and experience saw him outclass his opponent in the final two rounds, as he pulled away on points.
The final scorecards read 78:74 across the board in favour of Pfeifer, and the delighted German becomes the first Super heavyweight APB Inaugural Titleholder, and the very first man in the competition to win a title.
