Berik Abdrakhmanov, Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist and defending ASBC Asian Continental Champion claimed the biggest victory of his career when he won the Inaugural Title of the Lightweight class (60 kg) in AIBA Pro Boxing (APB).
The 30-year-old boxer defeated Uzbekistan’s Hurshid Tojibaev in the title bout, and has so far remained undefeated in the competition with a perfect 4-0 record.
How did you prepare for the APB title battle against Uzbekistan’s Hurshid Tojibaev knowing it was an eight round match?
It was great preparing for an eight round bout, and my trainers suggested how to work well against my tough Uzbek opponent. We made some changes in my tactics to keep my power in all of the eight rounds.
What was your specific tactics in the APB title match?
My instructions from my coaches was to wait for the best moments to begin quick counter-attacks, and after that try and punish Tojibaev with combinations.
After becoming APB Champion, who was the first to congratulate you?
My coach Marat Jakiev congratulated me first via mobile shortly after the fight, and it was a wonderful feeling to share with him my APB victory.
How does it feel to have the APB belt?
It is fantastic, and makes it all worth it after all my training over the past decade. Almost the entire Mangystau region called me after my triumph, and everyone wants to meet, congratulate and take some photos with me.
How are you celebrating your victory?
I am planning to spend some days with my family, and then after I will continue my training to prepare for the other events this year. If my coaches will approve, we might enjoy a long weekend in a nice place in our region.
What will be your next boxing competition?
I can’t say yet, but I will continue my training after this short celebration where we will then check the boxing calendar. I would like to take part in as many events as possible.
You are also a Policeman in Kazakhstan, do you like that job?
Yes, I like working as policeman and it has been a large part of my life for many years.
Finally, away from boxing, do you have any hobbies?
Yes, I like playing football, and I am a midfielder in our friendly matches. I do not have enough time to meet with my friends, but when we get together we organize a small football tournament.
