AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) has announced their list of fighters that will make up the Super Heavyweight (91+kg) category with a handful of hard-hitting boxers ready to rumble for a coveted quota place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The APB Super Heavyweights conclude the list of boxers competing in the tournament in what is the final unveiling of participating athletes with a crop of big men with flair, grit and guile looking to cause a stir in the division.
Amongst the elite group of gargantuan battlers is German star and two-time AIBA World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Erik Pfeifer. A perennial warrior with a never-say-die attitude, Pfeifer has been open about his eagerness to compete in APB.
“I really like the format of APB competition. It is amazing that we can box as pro and at the same time remain eligible for the Olympic Games.”
BUT WHAT I FIND REALLY SPECIAL IN THIS COMPETITION IS THAT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY WE WILL SEE THE EIGHT STRONGEST BOXERS ON THE PLANET IN EACH CATEGORY
“Currently the majority of professional fights take place between boxers who are not evenly matched. Very often they are promoted because one is a superstar who is fighting with somebody from a lower level. I believe that once the public understand that APB is a truly merit-based competition, and both boxers have equal chances to win each time safeguarding the intrigue of the match until the very end, the popularity of boxing will grow.”
In the mix alongside Pfeifer is Romanian Mihai Nistor, famous for his dominating displays in World Series of Boxing with Italia Thunder, Beijing Olympian Mohamed Arjaoui and Rafako Hussars Poland sensation Sergiy Verveyko.
Stoppage specialist and global superstar Magomedrul Medzhidov, the two-time world Super Heavyweight champion from Azerbaijan has garnered international reverence from fans and spectators a like.
Russian European champion in 2011, Magomed Omarov and Argentina Condors star man Fernando Ghiglioni complete a pack of power punching boxers looking to stamp their mark on the inaugural APB format.
With the marvel and mystique surrounding the Super Heavyweights, the division represents the Hollywood attraction of APB and will surely produce fireworks, shocks and surprises as the boxers strive to carve out their path that leads all the way to triumph at Rio 2016.
Now that all the APB fighters have been announced, the Official Draw for the AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) Pre-Ranking Phase will take place in the AIBA Boxing Academy in the Almaty region, Kazakhstan, on September 17.
The APB Boxers will get together for the first time at the AIBA Boxing Academy on September 14-17 to take part in a number of workshops on different aspects of the upcoming competition. The gathering’s busy three-day schedule includes video and photo shoot sessions and competition presentations.
