The European Boxing Confederation’s third continental event of 2014, the EUBC European Confederation Women’s Youth & Junior Continental Championships recently took place in Assisi, Italy.

Host nation Italy secured a record number of four gold medals in the the competition, while many other top European countries impress as well.

Athlete of the tournament
Sweden’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Agnes Alexiusson won the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament in Serbia three weeks ago, and claimed another gold medal in Italy.
With the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics upcoming, her confidence will be even further boosted after beating four tough opponents in Assisi, including Ireland’s new sensation Cheyenne O’Neill in the gold medal bout.

Russia claimed five junior and six youth gold medals in Assisi, taking home almost 50% of the possible top positions.

AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion Maria Shishmareva is Russia’s best junior boxer, and has dominated all of her international bouts in the recent years.

She stopped Turkey’s Melike Cakar in the final in Italy, and definitely has an exciting future.

Russia’s youth Flyweight class (51 kg) hope Ekaterina Paltceva was not able to qualify to the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics in Sofia, but she proved she has a contender at European level after beating Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara for the gold medal.

At youth level, Geliusa Galiyeva (48 kg), Elizaveta Nemtseva (64 kg), Ksenia Sinyavina (69 kg), AIBA Women’s Youth World Championships silver medallist Ekaterina Serova (81 kg) and Matrena Vyachkina (+81 kg) all won their finals in Assisi.

Surprise of the tournament
Ukraine’s Youth National Champion Valeria Manchak was not the top favourite of the youth Featherweight class (57 kg), but she was able to beat all of her rivals in the championships.

Manchak is not especially experienced at the international level, but her technique caused serious problems to her opponents in Assisi.

In the gold medal clash, the young Ukrainian defeated Ireland’s highly rated Amy Broadhurst in a hectic battle.

Ones to watch in the future
Poland’s defending AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Elzbieta Wojcik is so dominant at times that she appears to be at a completely different level than her opponents in the youth age group.

Her style and strength is so assured that she could be among the best at the elite level as well, and yet another gold medal in Italy signifies her prowess.

Both of England’s top junior boxers Ebonie Jones and Chantelle Reid junior girls claimed a gold medal in the continental championships in Assis,i where they were both too good for their Polish rivals.

Stat/fact of the tournament
More than two hundred young boxers competed in the fifth edition of the EUBC European Confederation Women’s Youth & Junior Continental Championships in Assisi, which was a record in the history of the event.
