Bowen, Bevan and Kaivo-Oja continued their winning paths in the 41st Tammer Tournament

Thirteen bouts were held in the 41st Tammer Tournament which opened the European boxing calendar in 2022 and as usual the host city is Tampere. England’s Aaron Bowen, Wales’ Taylor Bevan and Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja all won their second contests while the Lithuanian super heavyweight (+92kg) boxers stopped their rivals.

The annual Tammer Tournament is a combination of Round Robin and a normal competition with the participation of 37 boxers. Despite of the hard situation, the governmental decisions and some restrictions, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Finland, England, Wales and the Netherlands sent their boxers to the 41st Tammer Tournament. The Technical Delegate of the competition is Mr. Dragoljub Radovic of Montenegro.

The venue of the traditional competition is the Pyynikki Sports Hall as in the previous years. The competition was planning to be held in two female and eleven male weight categories in Tampere. The host of the tournament is the local boxing association and one of our experienced Technical Delegates, Ms. Anna Laukkanen is the organizer. The Tammer Tournament returned to the boxing agenda after two years of break due to the Covid-19 pandemic following the last edition was held in November 2019.

The safety of all participants, the continuous medical checks, the social distancing, the hygienic preparations, the vaccination check, wearing masks and all of the health controls are the responsibility of the local organizers in Finland avoid any new Covid-19 cases during the new edition of the Tammer Memorial Tournament.   

The bout of the day

England’s Aaron Bowen and Netherlands’ Gradus Kraus are both among the top boxers from the next generation who are aiming for top elite results in 2022. The English boxer impressed already as youth talent in 2017 when he claimed the gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games but he had to wait for four years to get the chance to compete for their elite national team. Bowen stopped his first opponent in the opening day but the tall and younger Dutch boxer was competitive for him. Kraus gave in everything in the third round and landed tough jabs as well but Bowen was able to keep his short advantage until the end of the gong.

The Round-up

Lithuania’s Aleksandr Trofimcuk robbed into the world of boxing in 2017 when he claimed silver medal at the EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships. The Lithuanian youngster impressed also at the Kielce 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and joined to the elite national team in the recent months. The 19-year-old Lithuanian has got a fantastic power, he landed the bigger punches than Estonia’s Maksim Ljubimov and won their middleweight (75kg) contest in Tampere.

Wales’ Taylor Bevan won several international youth tournaments in 2018 and in 2019 and he has been preparing to the Commonwealth Games with full speed where his target is to get a gold medal. The 20-year-old boxer moved up to the light heavyweight (80kg) and won his first contest on Day1 in Tampere with impressive performance. Bevan met with Lithuania’s Robertas Liorancas in the second competition day and he was better in all aspects of boxing taking his second triumphs in Tampere.

Finland’s AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Pihla Kaivo-Oja knows the venue of the Tammer Tournament very well despite of her age of 19. She lives and trains in the city and proved her amazing progress in the first and second days of boxing at the women’s light flyweight (50kg). The Finnish teenager faced with Sweden’s Tove Lundberg and overcame her neighbouring rival in the attacks in most of the exchanges. Kaivo-Oja is Finland’s next top female sensation besides to Vilma Viitanen after the Mira Potkonen’s era and won her second bout in Tampere.

The Lithuanians sent their two best super heavyweight (+92kg) boxers to the Tammer Tournament, Algirdas Baniulis and Jonas Jazevicius who both have got great goals in 2022. Baniulis spent less than two rounds in the ring and stopped Iceland’s new national team member Elmar Freyr Adalheidarsson. His teammate, Jazevicius also won his contest by RSC, England’s Courtney Bennett was not enough experienced to be competitive against the Lithuanian boxer.
