Czech Republic’s Erik Suchy caused a surprise at the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament on Day211 March 2020
One new session was held in the 15th edition of the traditional Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament in Vilnius, Lithuania. The best local boxer Aleksandr Trofimcuk had to do his very best to beat his rival on Day2 when Czech Republic’s Erik Suchy caused a surprise with his top quality of boxing.
The new edition of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament is one of the preparation events for the upcoming EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Budva, Montenegro from April 23. Boxers who were born in 2002 and in 2003 are eligible to attend in the new Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament.
The competition was named after Lithuania’s national boxing hero Danas Pozniakas who claimed gold medal at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games representing the Soviet Union and also crowned three-times in the history of the European Boxing Championships. During his long and successful career Lithuanian boxing icon Danas Pozniakas won 203 bouts out of his 217 total contests in the ’60s.
The bout of the day
Lithuania’s EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships silver medallist Aleksandr Trofimcuk is the most experienced boxer in their current youth team. He has been attending in the international events since 2016 and decided to move down to the welterweight (69kg) in the recent months. The 18-year-old Lithuanian had a strong opponent as first Czech Republic’s Milos Beranek who had also strong experiences from the recent four years. Trofimcuk did not show his peak performance this time but his stamina was enough to eliminate his Czech opponent who proved his talent in Vilnius.
The surprise of the day
Lithuania’s Nedas Gudomskas is only 17 but he competed already in four different EUBC Boxing Championships as schoolboy, junior and youth boxer. He is spending his second year among the youth boxers and the local fans expected his gold medal in Vilnius but he suffered a loss already in the quarter-finals of the light welterweight (64kg). Gudomskas was not in top shape against Czech Republic’s Erik Suchy and he was eliminated by his promising opponent in the front of the home crowd.
Ukraine’s Danylo Dryzhak claimed gold medal at the 2019 EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships but since January he is already a youth boxer. The 16-year-old talent was quickly involved to their youth national team and opened his campaign against a strong Indian rival, Vikas in Vilnius. The Ukrainian light flyweight (49kg) boxer used his aggressive attacks to catch the Indian and his work paid off in their contest. Lithuania’s Ernestas Sinkevicius bowed out Latvia’s Rauls Konstantinovs in this weight class.
Ukraine’s Yuriy Zakhareyev was gold medallist at the 2019 EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships and the tough boxer is still in the youth age group this year. The Ukrainian welterweight (69kg) boxer is one of the biggest names in the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament who eliminated his first opponent in Vilnius. Zakhareyev controlled all of the three rounds against Scotland’s Marc Johnstone and advanced to the next stage of boxing in the Lithuanian capital.
Lithuania’s Simonas Urbonavicius competed in the 2016 and 2018 EUBC European Boxing Championships as schoolboys and junior and he is high hopes as youth this year. The Lithuanian light heavyweight (81kg) boxer advanced to the next stage at the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament following his Indian opponent Vinit was disqualified in Vilnius. In the same weight class Ukraine’s tall Mykyta Gorbatenko eliminated Estonia’s Anton Vinogradov in a superb fight.
