Screenshot 2015-10-14 08.49.15Wednesday evening will witness the first session of finals at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha. Nine days and more than 200 bouts since the start of the competition, only twenty boxers now remain. Wednesday will see the first five gold medals awarded, with the second session of finals held on Thursday evening.

Among the finalists is Ireland’s EUBC European Champion and WSB star Michael Conlan. The Irish captain has been in the form of his life in Doha, and Uzbekistan’s Asian Conference silver medalist Murodjon Akhmadaliev now stands between him and gold.

“I haven’t really seen that much of my opponent, but I know he’s very good, he has to be to get to a world final. It’s going to be tough, but I’ll go in there with the right game plan and come away with the gold medal,” said a confident Conlan.

Russia’s defending EUBC European Champion and two-times National Champion Vitaly Dunaytsev eliminated Cuba’s Yasniel Toledo Lopez in the semi-finals and he now faces Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Gaibnazarov for light welterweight gold.

“The semi-final victory was a great success for me, a tactical triumph and Gaibnazarov will be a strong opponent. I don’t want to change anything from my previous style and tactics, and I will try to use my rival’s weaknesses in the gold medal bout and hope to be crowned champion in the AIBA World Boxing Championships,” said Dunaytsev.

In the heavyweight category, Russia’s Evgeny Tishchenko will be looking to go one better than his silver medal in Almaty two years ago, but the imposing figure of Cuba’s WSB champion Erislandy Savon now stands between him and gold.

“I managed to beat my Ukrainian opponent in the semi-final, which was a tough battle for me. In the final phase of a big event there are no easy opponents. Now I am in the final and meeting with the favourite Cuban boxer, but I will try to show some beautiful boxing on Wednesday and get my tactics just right,” said Russia’s Heavyweight class (91 kg) No.1 Evgeny Tishchenko after his semi-final.
