Greece’s duo as Pleas and Tsevrenidis were brilliant at the Gheorgheni Open on Day1

A long session with thirty contests were held in the first competition day at the Gheorgheni Open Tournament in Romania. The junior boxers delivered world class level of boxing in the opening session of the event on Day1. Greece’s Eleftherios Tsevrenidis and Georgios Pleas both impressed the experts in the venue and advanced to the next round.

Altogether 212 boxers are attending in the Gheorgheni Open Tournament in the two age groups. 81 junior male, 32 junior female, 82 schoolboys and 17 schoolgirls are competing for the medals and titles in the Open. The Technical Delegate of the Gheorgheni Open Tournament is Mr. Henrik Tavio of Finland.

This is the Romanian Boxing Federation’s third international event in 2022 after the Brasov Open and the Golden Belt. The first edition of the Gheorgheni Open is being held for the junior girls and boys, furthermore the schoolgirls and schoolboys. The new international tournament is a preparation event for the upcoming EUBC Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championships and the EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships.

The bout of the day

The Greek boxers reached excellent results in the schoolboys, junior and youth age groups in the previous one year. Their management decided to send a huge delegation to the Gheorgheni Open to Romania to get more experiences for their youngsters. Eleftherios Tsevrenidis is one of their top hopes among the juniors who competed at the Brasov Open in February and at the Greatest Open in Serbia this April. The Greek middleweight (75kg) boxer was stronger in the first round than Israel’s Ahmed Jabarin and he was able to keep that performance in the same level until the last bell advancing to the next stage of boxing in Gheorgheni. 

The Round-Up

Hungary’s Kevin Kozak has strong family roots to boxing as his elder brothers are involved to the sport. The 16-year-old Hungarian talent competed at the 2021 EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships and he won the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament with huge confidence earlier this month. Kozak proved his emerging attacks in the first round against Greece’s Konstantinos Sarigiannidis and he had the comfortable advantage after four minutes. Kozak delivered even better performance than in the Bornemissza Memorial in Eger and won their contest by large margin of differences.

Bulgaria’s Viktorio Iliev is well-experienced in the junior age group and the 16-year-old boxer dominated his opening bout in Gheorgheni. The Bulgarian featherweight (57kg) talent landed the stronger punches and the referee confirmed his RSC success in the second round eliminating Croatia’s Lucas Mirkovic. His compatriot, another strong Bulgarian junior hope, Konstantin Kostov dominated his lightweight (60kg) contest against Israel’s Adrian Warwar and advanced to the next round.

Greece’s Georgios Pleas was born in a boxing family and he followed the pathway of her sisters in the sport. The 16-year-old talent is one of the most experienced in their national team, as he attended at the 2019 EUBC Schoolboys European Boxing Championships and the 2021 EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships. The Greek featherweight (57kg) boxer spent short time in the ring when he faced Moldova’s Dimitrie Babalunga in Gheorgheni where his strength decided their contest immediately.

Austria sent only one boxer to the Gheorgheni Open Tournament but Saifullah Saidoulaev has top quality and the experiences to beat top rivals. The Austrian middleweight (75kg) boxer faced Croatia’s Karlo Tokalic whop achieved silver medal in their Junior National Championships two months ago. The 16-year-old Saidoulaev controlled the first round and took the lead on all of the judges’ scorecards after two minutes of fight. He landed decisive punches in the second round and the referee stopped their contest confirming Saidoulaev’s RSC triumph.
