The Bornemissza Youth & Junior Memorial Tournament is one of the oldest European competitions, this is the 70th edition in the event’s history. The competition was named after a Hungarian lieutenant, Gergely Bornemissza who supported the successful defence of the Castle of Eger during the Siege in 1552.

The safety of all participants, the continuous medical checks, the social distancing, the hygienic preparations, wearing masks and all of the health controls are the responsibility of the local organizers in Hungary to avoid any new Covid-19 cases during the Bornemissza Youth & Junior Memorial Tournament. The Technical Delegate of the competition is Mr. Dragoljub Radovic who officiated also the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

The bout of the day

France’s two-time Junior National Champion Louis Ameline joined to the youth national team in 2020 and attended in international events to increase his experiences and meet with strong boxers. The 18-year-old French moved down to the welterweight (69kg) since his last appearance in the international events. Ameline tried to control his semi-final contest against Hungary’s younger Romeo Buza but he needed to do his very best to find the weak points of the local boxer. The final verdict was split (3:2) decision in the favour of Ameline who remained his chance alive to win the tournament.

The surprise of the day

Hungary’s Mate Horvath was bronze medallist at the 2018 EUBC European Schoolboys Boxing Championships and he won the recent national titles with strong performance. He opened his campaign at the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament also in style but the 17-year-old boxer suffered an unexpected loss to Switzerland’s Adam Messibah in the semi-finals of the youth welterweight (69kg).

The Round-Up

Cyprus never produced such a bit talent as EUBC European Women’s Schoolgirl Champion Laila Abdullatif who arrived to the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament to start her campaign before the EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships. She claimed a historical gold medal for her nation in Georgia two year ago and proved her strong development at the junior light flyweight (48kg). She eliminated Hungary’s Greta Bojti and another local boxer Kata Nagy during her road to the finals. Abdullatif met with a third Hungarian in the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament, and her success over Vivien Koloszar meant that she claimed the next international gold medal.

Hungary’s Izabell Devenyi claimed gold medal at the 2019 EUBC European Schoolgirls Boxing Championships as Cyprus’ Laila Abdullatif. The 16-year-old Hungarian was able to keep her weight as a junior as well and competes at the bantamweight (54kg). Devenyi was too strong for Austria’s Nikolina Novakovic in their semi-final and will be meeting for the gold medal with Slovakia’s Bibiana Lovasova.

Finland’s new junior talent Yessica Frantsi competed already in a few international events including the strong Golden Girl Box Cup. The Finnish lightweight (60kg) boxer dominated the first and second rounds against Hungary’s Mirella Oroszlanyi and stopped her opponent in the third. Her final opponent will be Hungary’s Fanni Deak in the last competition day while another Finnish boxer, their men’s bantamweight (54kg) boxer Abdelsalam El-Gendy shined in the semi-finals of the event.

Hungary’s EUBC European Schoolboys Boxing Championships bronze medallist Levente Olah is an impressive talent who arrived in sensational shape to the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament. The 16-year-old Hungarian spent short time in the preliminary and quarter-final stages of the event and he decided his third contest also very quickly. Olah stopped Romania’s experienced Angelo-Cristian Covaci in the first round and following his third RSC victories, he will be facing with Hungary’s Almos Lantos at the junior featherweight (57kg) final.
