He was replaced by another talented Scottish boxer, Luke Bibby who impressed in the previous competitions and during the training sessions his coaches decided to select him to attend in Porec. The 20-year-old Scottish had a good first round against Spain’s Oier Ibarreche and gave in everything from the opening seconds to win their light welterweight (63.5kg) contest. The Spaniard is only 19 and competed in the youth age group last year, but he found his best rhythm to land enough shots to beat Bibby in one of the closest contests of Day1.

Spain’s Sergio Martinez attended at the Kielce 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and in the last edition of the EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships in Roseto degli Abruzzi. The Spanish talent moved up to the light middleweight (71kg) and tried to use his speed against Moldova’s experienced elite national team member, Nicolae Bucsa in the first round. Martinez is only 19 but he progressed so well since the last U22 championships that he could box in the same level until the last gong to win the contest.
Georgia sent a powerful and very young team to the EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships to Porec and their Lasha Gagnidze opened their campaign in the first bout of the day in the Ring B. The Georgian light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer had a very tough battle against Denmark’s Abou Arab Abdallah but his last round managed his success in the event. Slovakia’s Miroslav Herceg had also a very hectic contest in the first bout of the day in the Ring A, but finally he could celebrate his success over Norway’s Sayed Kazemi.
Czech Republic’s EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships silver medallist Erik Suchy had a tough Bulgarian opponent, Krasimir Dzhurov who had fantastic junior and youth results in the recent years. Suchy recovered from his injuries and returned to the sport just in this EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships and the best Czech future hope defeated his Bulgarian rival in Porec. In the next light welterweight (63.5kg) contest, Azerbaijan’s 19-year-old Jalal Gurbanov used his distance well to beat Finland’s Jere Niemelainen controlling all of the three rounds.
Hungary’s Istvan Gerzsenyi won their Elite National Championships last December at the age of 20 and arrived to the EUBC U22 European Boxing Championships as a secret medal favourite. The Hungarian light middleweight (71kg) boxer had to box for the last 16 and met with Ireland’s new U22 National Champion, Darragh Gilroy. The Irish tried to move away from the Hungarian attacks but landed not enough shots in the first round. The Hungarian ruled the middle of the ring and his strength decided their preliminary contest in Porec.
Turkey’s Kerem Ozmen was the main sensation of the Belgrade 2021 AIBA Men’s Elite World Boxing Championships where he achieved silver medal after his 19th birthday. The Turkish boxer was the huge favourite against Ireland’s James McDonagh but he had to do his very best to beat his opponent today.
