Ireland’s young boxers are gearing up for the 2013 European Schoolboy Championships in Dublin22 July 2013
Boxing at the Irish Amateur Boxing Association hosted tournament begins at 3pm at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin next Monday, July 29th.
The IABA have named an 18-strong squad – which includes twin brothers Jamie and Jason Harty – for the 11th edition of the Championships since the inaugural tournament in Rome in 2003.
Ireland’s young boxers claimed a record breaking ten medals – click here and here for all European Schoolboy Championships results – at the 2012 EUBC European Schoolboy Championships in Anapa, Russia.
The Boys In Green also finished second in the medals table behind Russia at the Black Sea holiday resort.
Irish team manager Paddy Gallagher said that they are looking forward to what he believes will be a competitive and exciting occasion in Dublin.
“It will be tough to beat the medal haul from Anapa, but we have a talented young squad and if they perform to their full potential they will do well, he said.
“They are preparing very well for the tournament and they are eager to get the Championships underway.”
Ireland’s boxers have won medals at every European Schoolboy Championships since Rome 2003.
Tommy Murphy, President of the IABA, confidently predicted that the 2013 Championships will be an outstanding occasion for European boxing.
“The Irish Amateur Boxing Association is very much looking forward to welcoming our fellow European Associations to Ireland,” he said.
“I have no doubt that some of the Olympic and World stars of the future will be competing in Ireland this summer.
“These top tournaments are part of our strategic plan to give our young athletes the experience of competing against the best in Europe and the World.”
The 2013 EUBC European Schoolboy Championships will be staged in 18 Weight Categories:38,5kg, 40kg, 41,5kg, 43kg, 44,5kg, 46kg, 48kg, 50kg, 52kg, 54kg, 56kg, 59kg, 62kg, 65kg, 68kg, 72kg, 76kg, 76+kg.
