Germany, England and Russia

The German Boxing Federation recently hosted an international team tournament in Heidelberg, where the host nation, Russia and the British team attended the three-day long competition.

Athlete of the tournament
England’s breakout star of 2014 was Joseph Joyce, who won the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland in August, and displayed world class performances throughout the whole year.

Joyce began 2015 in the same fashion, as he was too strong for former German Youth National Champion Max Keller and current German National Champion Ali Kiyidin at the Super Heavyweight class (+91 kg) to continue his excellent winning series in Heidelberg.

Team of the tournament
The German boxing team provided great performances in the city of Heidelberg where Robert Harutiunjan (60 kg), Vjaceslav Kerber (69 kg), Abu-Lubdeh Abdulrahman (75 kg), Leon Bunn (81 kg) and Albon Pervizaj (91 kg) all became the best of their weight classes.

Germany’s great future hope Albon Pervizaj continued his excellent winning series in the event in Heidelberg where he was too smart for Russia’s Sadam Magomedov.

The 19-year-old Heavyweight class (91 kg) boxer had a superb run in the last months of 2014 with great performances in the German National Championships, the German National Boxing League, the Adem Jashari Tournament in Kosovo and in the dual match against Poland.

Surprise of the tournament
Russia’s 22-year-old Abdulkhakim Batyrov is not an experienced boxer at the international level, but he is a strong talent who has developed his tactical skills in the recent past.

The Russian Bantamweight class (56 kg) boxer defeated Welshmen Sean McGoldrick in Heidelberg, a surprise after the British star claimed a bronze medal in 2014’s Commonwealth Games.

One to watch
England’s Samuel Maxwell became famous at the 2012 AIBA European Olympic Qualifiers where he eliminated Russia’s former AIBA World Champion Albert Selimov in a ferocious battle in Turkey.

The English boxer has won a lot of international tournaments since then, and is approaching the top level of the Light Welterweight class (64 kg) after a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last August.

26-year-old Maxwell was too strong for Germany’s EUBC European Continental Championships quarter-finalist Kastriot Sopa and Governor Cup winner Aleksey Mazur of Russia in Heidelberg.
