Koszewska vs. Marczykowska for gold at the welterweight in the Silesian Women’s Open Tournament

The first part of junior and youth finals was held on the fifth competition day in the 15th edition of the Silesian Women’s Open Boxing Tournament in Gliwice, Poland. The dream final at the elite welterweight (69kg) has realized following European Games winner Karolina Koszewska and Natalia Marczykowska both advanced to the title bout on Day5.

The Silesian Women’s Open Tournament is holding until September 6 and the event is the first international competition since the stoppage in March. The Silesian Women’s Open Tournament is streamed from Day3 until the finals by the Tylko Sport Telewizja Internetowa in the vimeo.com channel.

The 15th Silesian Women’s Open Boxing Tournament holds for the elite, youth and junior female boxers in Gliwice. The safety of all participants, the continuous medical checks, the social distancing, the hygienic preparations, wearing masks and all of the controls are the responsibility of the local organizers in Gliwice. The first edition of the Silesian Women’s Open Boxing Tournament was held in 2006.

The bout of the day

Poland’s 18-year-old Izabela Rozkoszek attended in her first national event in 2017 and claimed silver medal at the 2018 edition of the Silesian Open Women’s Tournament among the juniors. She bowed out one of her main rivals, Julia Szeremeta in the semi-finals of the youth featherweight (57kg) on Day4 and continued her winning path. Rozkoszek, who trains in the KS Garda Gieraltowice, was confident against another Polish talent Martyna Bruch in the final. Their bout was a selection for future events which delivered a close fight between them but Rozkoszek achieved the gold medal of the weight class.

The surprise of the day

Poland’s Barbara Marcinkowska claimed silver medal at the 2019 EUBC European Women’s Junior Boxing Championships but she is still new among the youth boxers this year. The 17-year-old talent had to meet with an experienced rival Oliwia Toborek who bagged silver in the 2018 EUBC European Women’s Junior Boxing Championships. Toborek had more bouts during her career and better results but their final at the youth light heavyweight (81kg) was won by Marcinkowska on Day5.

The Round-Up

Six finals were held in the junior age group at the Silesian Women’s Open Tournament on Day5 and some of the best Polish future hopes won their gold medals. Natalia Gras had a tough final against Oliwia Golebiewska at bantamweight (54kg) but she succeeded. Natalia Wojciechowska controlled her final against Julianna Mrozinska at the featherweight (57kg) before Karolina Kuhn won the narrowest title bout at the light welterweight (63kg).

Poland’s Natalia Marczykowska delivered strong youth results in 2017 and following that she had also good performance in the U22 events. The 21-year-old boxer has been preparing to the upcoming EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships with full speed and on that way she eliminated Julia Chudy in the semi-finals of the elite welterweight (69kg). Marczykowska won their contest by unanimous decision in Gliwice.

Karolina Koszewska is one of the most experienced European female boxers who began her boxing career as a pioneer in the sport. The 38-year-old Polish welterweight (69kg) boxer is the defending European Games winner and she won several tournaments also in the recent three years. Koszewska had to meet in the semi-finals with Estonia’s promising Berit Loomagi and used her longer reach to beat her Baltic rival. Koszewska advanced to the finals of the weight class and will be boxing against Marczykowska on Day6 which could be one of the most anticipated fights in Gliwice.
