Mingalimova, Spirina and Abdullatif are among the female gold medallists in the 5th Junior Nations Cup

Further twenty bouts were held in the fourth competition day at the 5th Junior Nations Cup in the city of Vrbas, Serbia. The junior girls competed for the titles in the session and twelve of them celebrated their successes in the event. The junior stars of the event such as the Russian girls, Renata Mingalimova, Karina Korobova, Polina Spirina, furthermore Cyprus’ Laila Abdullatif all claimed gold medal in Vrbas.

The Serbian international competition is a preparation event before the upcoming EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships. The junior continental event will be held in Tbilisi, Georgia on July 1-12 after the EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships. Boxers who were born in 2005 and in 2006 are eligible to attend at the 5th Junior Nations Cup where the Technical Delegate of the competition is Mr. Henrik Tavio of Finland.

Altogether 109 boxers from 16 nations are attending in the competition in Serbia. The following nations sent boxers to the 5th Junior Nations Cup: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and the United States.

The Junior Nations Cup is holding at the Drago Jovovic Sports Hall in Vrbas where the Tournament Director & Competition Manager is Mr. Jovan Panic. The Junior Nations Cup was launched in 2017 and it is holding at the fifth times.  

The safety of all participants, the continuous medical checks, the social distancing, the hygienic preparations, wearing masks and all of the health controls are the responsibility of the local organizers in Serbia to avoid any new Covid-19 cases during the new Junior Nations Cup.

The bout of the day

The Russian junior girls shined in the competition, their boxers earned eleven out of the twelve gold medals on Day4. Renata Mingalimova won the 2018 EUBC European Schoolgirls Boxing Championships and the 2020 EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships therefore she was the top favourite for the gold medal at the flyweight (50kg). Mingalimova had to do her very best against her teammate, Kristina Moyseyeva in the final of the 5th Junior Nations Cup. Mingalimova shared her power well in their final and after the national and other international competitions, she was crowned also in Serbia.

The surprise of the day

Montenegro produced fantastic results in the recent two years especially among the junior and youth boxers. Their new junior sensation, Mirko Sarcevic defeated his first rival in Vrbas and surprisingly he was able to continue his winning path at the middleweight (75kg). The Montenegrin was in same level in the first round as Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Junior Champion Batyrkhan Seitenov and surprised his opponent. Sarcevic was never stopped attacking and his hard work delivered for him an unexpected success against one of the stars of the event.

The Round-up

The first gold medal of the 5th Junior Nations Cup was achieved by Russia’s Anastasia Akhunova who defeated her teammate Lia Patlai in the final of the pinweight (46kg). Another Russian home battle was won by Anastasia Kool who developed rapidly this year following she moved up to the light bantamweight (52kg). Kool controlled all of the three rounds against Yelizaveta Yermolayeva and celebrated her next gold medal.

Cyprus’ new sensation, 2019 EUBC European Schoolgirls Champion Laila Abdullatif claimed gold medal at the Bornemissza Junior Memorial Tournament on May and secured her next title at the Junior Nations Cup. Abdullatif eliminated Italy’s Chiara Bencivegna by RSC in the semi-finals and she was too smart also for her final opponent. Abdullatif claimed the gold medal of the women’s light flyweight (48kg) after beating Russia’s Viktoria Shareva in the final with precise boxing.

Russia’s Polina Spirina is a strong talent but she expected a tough final against Italy’s Matilde Ferraris in the final of the bantamweight (54kg). The Russian surprised her technician rival in the first round and her strength decided their contest. Another Russian junior talent at the lightweight (60kg), Daria Novinskaya also met with an experienced Italian opponent in the final, Valentina Marra and claimed another gold for her nation.
