No Program Changes by IOC for 2016 Rio Olympic Games
05 August 2013On July 02, 2013 the International Olympic Committee Executive Board discussed the topic of possible modifications to disciplines, events, quotas and competition formats at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, and reiterated that any request from International Federations (IFs) that would result in a higher number of athletes or increased number of medals, thereby adding to the cost and complexity of the Games, would not be considered.
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) takes note and respects this decision but hopes that more opportunities will be opened to women boxers at the 2020 Olympic Games.
However, as IOC decided to maintain all current programs, three women’s weight categories will be present in Rio for the sport of boxing with a total of 36 boxers qualified (12 in each weight category). Specific weight categories, based on the recommendations of the AIBA Technical & Rules Commission and with the approval of the AIBA Executive Committee, will be submitted to IOC’s final approval soon.
