Presentation of the EUBC European Elité Men Boxing Championships 2017, in Kharkiv (Ukraine)

The European Elité Men Championships begun in 1925 and, for the first time after 41 years, arrive at Ukraine, in Kharkiv, the second largest city after Kiev.

In this Championship participate over the 60% of the best forces of boxing: for EUBC is the sporting event which confirms like absolute jewel, with the presence of Nations and participants superior to any other tournament other than the World Cup. These Championships open to four-year cycle that will bring the Tokyo Olympics 2020. First gong today at Lokomotiv Palace, the finals on 24 June.

EUBC President Franco Falcinelli is sure that the edition of Karkhiv will confirm the great vitality of amateur boxing in Europe.

“The presence of many champions and the inclusion of many ambitious youth, ensures the uncertainty of the tournament.

The recent EUBC European U22 in Braila (Romania) has revealed elements of secure future and many of these will be present in Karkhiv, guaranteeing the quality of the tournament which includes athletes from all over Europe and quantitative presence than expected.

The incentive represented by the promotion of the first eight by category at the World Championships in Hamburg 2017, is the further reason and desire of each participant to give their best. Ukraine and its history in the European Elité Men Championship

For the first time, Ukraine debut as host country in the EUBC European Championships. In 1993, for the first time, Ukraine comes to the XXX European Championship of EABA (EUBC today) which was held in Bursa (Turkey) as independent country. In subsequent editions won 11 gold medals and finished in 10th place in rank. In the latest edition 2015 hasn’t won medals and is now determined to bounce back, in front of his home crowd.

Some numbers

There are 40 nations and 249 athletes entered at Championships. It almost arrived the record of 41 Nations achieve in Mosca (Russia) 2010 and Samokov (Bulgaria) 2015.

Participating boxers. 10 boxers: Ukraine, Azerbajian, Russia, Hungary, Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany, Italy. 9 boxers: Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Ireland, Moldova, England, Scotland. 8 boxers: Romania, Croatia. 7 boxers: Lithuania; 6 boxers: France, Slovakia. 5 boxers: Austria, Spain. 4 boxers: Greece, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Czech  Republic, Israel, Netherlands, Slovenia; 3 boxers: Cyprus, Latvia, Albania, Sweden; Norway. 2 boxers: Denmark, Estonia, Kosovo, Finland. 1 boxer: Belgium.

Six outgoing champions are participating: 49 kg Egorov (Rus); 52 kg Asenov (Bul); 64 kg Dunaytsev (Rus); 75 kg Khumakov (Rus); 81 kg Ward (Irl), 91 kg (Rus)

Boxers absentee: 56 kg Conlan (Irl) and kg 60 Cordina (Eng) because they passed by Pro boxing; welter Stanionis (Lit) and +91 Hrgovic (Cro).

Return of the Boxer in this Championships: The Azerbaijani Majidov, two world titles and Europe 2013.

The younger and the older boxers

The younger boxer is danish, Chaouki El Ahmad (56 kg.): he is born on November 2nd 1998, and he is origin from north Africa. The older one is Serbian Zoran Radic, who turns 40 years on 14 December.

Curiosity

 Among the members there are two sets of twins: are the Hungarians Gabor and Martin Virban born on January 26, 1998 and Italians Gianmarco and Federico Serra born on May 28, 1995.

In the last edition of European Championships have come on podium 19 Nations, 10 on finals and 6 won gold, including Croatia, thanks to + 91 Hrgovic, brings the first European triumph to homeland.

Other winners: Russia (4), Ireland (2), Great Britain, Bulgaria, Lithuania (1).

To Super Heavy (+91kg) are entered 26 nations in front of 14 nations entered to kg 49.

The Moldovan Veaceslav Gojan, born on May 18, 1983 and participating at the European Championships 2002 in Perm (Rus) where he came second, has never failed at other issues, reaching the ninth presence in Ukraine, absolute record, celebrated in 2011 in Ankara with gold in the 54 kg.

The younger champion is the Azerbaijani Salman Alizada (kg 49), champion when he was 17 years old; campione a 17 anni; to follow the Irish Joe Ward (kg 81), two months older, in 2011 in Ankara.
