Quote of the Day – Spain’s lone medallist in Minsk Gabriel Escobar
30 June 2019Spain’s best male boxer Gabriel Escobar defeated Armenia’s Baregham Harutyunyan in the quarter-finals of the men’s flyweight (52kg) at the European Games in Minsk. His success means Escobar is now guaranteed medallist, the lone one from Spain and remained unbeaten this year.
He joined to the national youth team in 2014 and after two years of hard work he was involved to the elite squad in Spain. Escobar claimed two silver medals in the 2017 and 2018 editions of the EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships and titles in the Mediterranean Games and also in the EUBC European Union Boxing Championships.
“My strong Armenian opponent was very experienced but we found out a strong strategy with my coach against him and my hard work paid off in the quarter-finals. I was patient and let him go closer to me and I used my counter-attacks to catch him which tactic worked well.
I felt myself good in my quarter-final and it is a great feeling I am already in the semi-finals at the European Games. The medal is in my bag but I am still looking forward to my next bout to join to the finals. I am expecting a good fight against Italy’s Manuel Cappai who is also an experienced boxer in my weight class but I know I have the skills to win this next key contest in Minsk,” said Spain’s lone medallist at the European Games Gabriel Escobar after his quarter-finals.
