Hosts Russia secured a remarkable haul of gold medals at the EUBC European Confederation Schoolboys Boxing Championships in Anapa between 1-9 November. Infront of their home crowd, the team won an impressive 14 golds out of a possible 18, repeating their feat of 2012 achieved in the same city.

Boxers born in 2001 and in 2002 were eligible to compete, and it was the young Russians who showed the current rude health of the sport in the country with a domineering display. Among the few other nations to find success, the brother of Ukraine’s 2014 champion Dmytro Maidakov – Yuriy – won gold medal at the same 65kg weight, and Tigran Shatverovi won Georgia’s first title at the competition since 2006 by beating local boy Ruslan Martynenko.

England’s Adam Hussain took the 38.5kg gold in Hungary one year ago, and it was his 14-year-old team-mate Cameron Paul who was able to repeat his success in Anapa.

“I felt quite nervous and under pressure, but at the same time relaxed as I had everything to gain and nothing to lose. It was very close throughout, almost like a high intensity, physical chess match, and like a battle of techniques and ring craft. However, after watching it back several times, I believe that it was my straight shots, movement and speed which gave me the edge in the fight,” said England’s new champion Cameron Paul.
