Slovakia’s Nicole Durikova shocked the Indian favourite in the opening day of the 28th Julius Torma Youth Memorial Tournament
27 September 2019The 28th edition of the Julius Torma Youth Memorial Tournament started with its first competition day in Prague, Czech Republic where the Technical Delegate of the competition is an experienced official, Mr. Dragoljub Radovic of Serbia. Slovakia’s Nicole Durikova has done the major sensation of the first competition day eliminating the Indian favourite at the women’s light flyweight (48kg).
Mr. Julius Torma was a Hungarian-descent boxer who was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1922 but competed for Czechoslovakia in the international competitions a few decades ago. He earned a fantastic gold medal in the London 1948 Olympic Games at the welterweight and attended also in the 1952 Helsinki and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Torma was gold medallist in the Oslo 1949 European Boxing Championships and claimed further bronze medals in the in the Dublin 1947 and in West Berlin 1955 editions.
Altogether 45 boxers attended in the 2018 edition of the Julius Torma Youth Memorial Tournament in Prague one year ago when Russia topped the medal rankings. The new 28th edition is a bigger event with the participation of such strong boxing powers as India, Russia, and Kazakhstan.
Bout of the day
Russia’s Timur Avdoyan claimed the gold medal at the Anapa 2018 EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships and joined to the youth age group this January. The 17-year-old super heavyweight (+91kg) boxer had to meet as first with his main rival, Kazakhstan’s Amanat Sabyrgali. His Kazakh opponent is also well-experienced in the international tournaments and their first round was tight one. The young Russian turned up the heat in time and following his clear shots Avdoyan remained the winner of their top fight.
Surprise of the day
The Slovakian youth girls impressed in the recent two years in the international stage, their Jessica Triebelova and Miroslava Jedinakova won important tournaments. Their new top youth female boxer Nicole Durikova delivered the main sensation of the first competition day of the Julius Torma Youth Memorial Tournament. The Slovakian, who attended in the EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships earlier this month, shocked India’s top favourite Muskan and got her biggest scalp during her boxing career.
The Round-Up
Kazakhstan’s Mariya Gladkova was bronze medallist in the 2018 ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships but since then she moved back to the featherweight (57kg). She had to eliminate tough national rivals but following her successful tournaments, the 18-year-old talent received the right to attend in the Julius Torma Youth Memorial Tournament. Gladkova worked well on feet in her debuting contest in Prague where she bowed out India’s Priya Kushwaha winning the bout unanimously.
Slovakia’s Miroslav Herceg is a talented boxer at the lightweight (60kg) but he had to do his very best to beat Russia’s new national team member Islam Balamirzoev in the opening day of the event. In another key contest in this weight class, India’s experienced Ankit Narwal eliminated Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Junior Champion Aitzhan Ashirkhan winning the top fight by split decision.
The best Czech youth boxers gave in everything to win their tough contests in the first day of boxing but the draw was unlucky for them. Milos Beranek lost to Kazakhstan’s Azamat Bektas by split decision at the welterweight (69kg) and after Dominik Gloser was also near to beat a top opponent, Russia’s Nazar Andreyev at the middleweight (75kg). In spite of their narrow losses, both Czechs proved their talents in our sport.
