Strong opening for the Spanish team at the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament with nine victories

The Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament opened in Lithuania’s capital in Vilnius where twenty-five contests are already finished in this first two sessions. The Spanish boxers amazed in the Lithuanian international tournament where their talents won all of their nine contests in these sessions.

Boxers who were born in 2002 and in 2003 are eligible to attend in the youth competition which The Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament is a preparation competition for the upcoming AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Kielce, Poland in April 10-24.

The competition was named after Lithuania’s national boxing hero Danas Pozniakas who claimed gold medal at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games representing the Soviet Union and also crowned three-times in the history of the European Boxing Championships. During his long and successful career Lithuanian boxing icon Danas Pozniakas won 203 bouts out of his 217 total contests in the 1960s.

The safety of all participants, the continuous medical checks, the social distancing, the hygienic preparations, wearing masks and all of the health controls are the responsibility of the local organizers in Lithuania to avoid any new Covid-19 cases during the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament.

The bout of the day

Czech Republic’s Erik Suchy is the defending champion at the light welterweight (64kg) in the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament but in the quarter-finals he had to do his very best to remain his chance alive to get his second title in Lithuania. The 18-year-old boxer met with his teammate, Kelvin Soquessa who is also a very talented athlete in the Czech Republic. Suchy was more experienced and his physical condition was enough strong to decide their impressive contest in Vilnius. Suchy’s plan is to defend his throne in the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament and get a medal for the Czech Republic in the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

The Round-Up

Spain’s Juan Pantoja is an impressive talent at the flyweight (52kg) who competed high number of international events in the recent two and half years. The Spaniard had unpredictable footwork in his opening contest against Estonia’s Allan Morozov and controlled the fight from the first seconds. Pantoja is a strong Spanish hopeful in the upcoming AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships therefore he eliminated the Baltic opponent easily at the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament.

Poland’s Marcel Materla is an experienced boxer in the international events who maintained the best fighting distance successfully against Slovakia’s Lukas Lorinc and won their bantamweight (56kg) contest unanimously. His fellow, Jakub Krzpiet also boxed in the last editions of the EUBC Championships therefore he was too experienced for Lithuania’s Gabrielius Maciulis at the flyweight (52kg).

Lithuania’s Nedas Gudomskas is one of the most experienced youth boxers of the host country who had all of the skills to beat Latvia’s neighbouring Edgars Kundics at the light welterweight (64kg). Another well-known Lithuanian youth boxer, EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships silver medallist Aleksandr Trofimciuk has done enough to beat Czech Republic’s Milos Beranek at the middleweight (75kg). 

Spain’s Sergio Martinez competed at the 2020 EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships in Budva and he won also one bout in the Boxam Tournament in Castellon de la Plana last week. The Spanish welterweight (69kg) boxer impressed against Lithuania’s Armandas Bielskus and advanced to the next stage of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament. His teammate in the same category, Frank Martinez was slightly better than Lithuania’s Arnas Kazakevicius and he is also a guaranteed medallist in Vilnius.
