The Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament saw 20 new champions in Subotica

Following the Brandenburg Youth Cup another preparation event for the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships was held in the European continent. The Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament is a growing international event where the winners of the new edition could be stars also in the Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

The 36th edition of the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament was held in the city of Subotica which is located in the Vojvodanske region of Serbia. The competition was held in 10 women and 10 men weight classes in Subotica where boxers arrived from three different Confederations.

Italy’s defending EUBC European Women’s Youth Champion Martina La Piana was in top form in the recent half year and defeated all of her rivals in the international competitions. The 17-year-old Italian flyweight (51kg) boxer continued her winning series and she was a slightly better than India’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion Jyoti in the final of the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament.

Russia’s EUBC European Women’s Junior Champion Valeria Rodionova has got strong experiences from the international events since 2015 and she impressed once again. The 18-year-old Russian featherweight (57kg) boxer eliminated Kazakhstan’s Yerkezhan Dauletzhankyzy in the semi-final and she was also too strong for Italy’s experienced Giordana Sorrentino in the gold medal bout.

Russia’s Nune Asatrian claimed silver medal in the last EUBC European Confederation Women’s Youth Boxing Championships in April and the Armenian-descent boxer has done wonderful job at the lightweight (60kg) in Subotica. The 17-year-old former EUBC European Junior Champion stopped her Czech rival in the last four and she had all of the technical potential to beat Germany’s Stefanie Von Berge in the final of the event.

Russia’s Lanna Maliuganova won their Women’s Youth National Championships in the beginning of the year at the light welterweight (64kg) which was a surprise and has done her international debut successfully claiming silver medal in the EUBC European Confederation Women’s Youth Boxing Championships in April. The Russian talent used her best fighting distance against India’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Manisha which delivered a gold medal for Maliuganova.

Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Women’s Youth Champion and AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion Nadezhda Ryabets and Russia’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Champion superstar Anastasia Shamonova advanced to the final of the middleweight (75kg) in Subotica. The two giants delivered one of the most hectic battles of the whole event which was surprisingly won by Ryabets in Subotica. Shamonova suffered her first ever international loss during her whole career but she can do revenge in the upcoming Budapest 2018 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.

Scotland’s Reese Lynch delivered one of the biggest surprises of the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament when he bowed out Thailand’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Atichai Phoemsap in the semi-final of the lightweight (60kg). Following that impressive success the Scottish boxer was still hungry for another big scalp and he was able to beat India’s Ankit in the final of the event.

Thailand sent a strong team to the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament where their first title was achieved by two-time ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships bronze medallist Bannaphon Pannon. The 18-year-old Thai light welterweight (64kg) talent, whose father Suban was an Olympian boxer, did not stop his attacks until the end of the last gong in the final which was enough to beat India’s technician Akash in the title contest.

Serbia’s lone gold medal in the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament was delivered by Slobodan Jovanovic at the men’s light heavyweight (81kg). The 18-year-old Serbian boxer eliminated F.Y.R. of Macedonia’s Sergej Demirov in the semi-final with top performance and he felt the support of the local crowd in the final when he met with Croatia’s Petar Leskur. The final verdict was unanimous decision to Jovanovic who reached his career’s best in Subotica.
