The Spanish team dominated the male finals of the Boxam Tournament and bagged six out of the eight gold medals11 October 2020
The Boxam Elite International Boxing Tournament finished with the eight men finals at the fifth competition day in Castellon de la Plan which is located in the Valencian Community in Eastern Spain. The Spanish Olympian duo, Gabriel Escobar and José Quiles both won their weight classes in Castellon de la Plana but his teammates Gazimagomed Jalidov and Emmanuel Reyes were also excellent in the day of the finals. A promising boxer, Ioan Croft, the Welsh teenager won the welterweight (69kg) in the Boxam Tournament.
Altogether 25 women and 43 men boxers attended in the 34th edition of the Boxam Tournament in Castellon de la Plana. United States of America achieved three while France two female gold medals in the international event. The Spanish team dominated the male part of the Boxam Tournament and bagged six gold medals. The remaining two men titles were shared between Wales and United States.
The safety of all participants, the continuous medical checks, the social distancing, the hygienic preparations, wearing masks and all of the health controls were the responsibility of the local organizers in Spain to avoid any new Covid-19 cases during the Boxam Elite International Boxing Tournament.
The Technical Delegate of the Boxam Tournament was Mrs. Susanne Karrlander of Sweden while EUBC Competition Manager Mr. Dmitriy Gaistruk was also in the venue of the prestigious competition. The Chairman of the EUBC Medical Commission Mr. Ioannis Filippatos of Greece followed all bouts in the venue to check all safety instructions. The President of the Spanish Boxing Federation, the new AIBA EC member Mr. Felipe Martinez watched all five days of boxing in Castellon de la Plana.
The bout of the day
Spain’s defending European Games winner Gabriel Escobar reached the world class level step by step in the recent six years and currently he is one of the best flyweight (52kg) boxers in the globe. The 24-year-old Spaniard, who qualified already to the Tokyo Olympic Games, eliminated United States’ Abraham Perez in the semi-finals in Castellon de la Plana and met for the title with Italy’s experienced Federico Serra. His Italian opponent worked well in the previous seasons of the World Series of Boxing and had a competitive rival for Escobar in the final of the Boxam Tournament. Escobar stepped into the gas from the second round and defeated his 26-year-old Italian rival returning to the international stage with a gold medal.
The surprise of the day
Wales has got a successful Talent Program and their management has been building up a new elite team to reach their goals at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Their young teenage boxers impressed in the Boxam Tournament which event was the preparation for them to the EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships. Ioan Croft won youth tournaments in 2019 and joined to the elite age group this January as many of his teammates. The Welsh teenager met in the final with Monaco’s sensation Hugo Micallef who also proved top performance during his road to the finals of the welterweight (69kg). Croft surprised the Monegasque boxer with his excellent combinations and his outstanding technical skills delivered a gold medal for the Welshman.
Besides to Gabriel Escobar, his fellow, the 23-year-old José Quiles has also qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games through the European Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. The Spanish featherweight (57kg) boxer, who claimed bronze medal at the Kharkiv 2017 EUBC European Boxing Championships, met in the final with his younger teammate Antonio Barrul. Quiles was technically and tactically better than his 21-year-old opponent and returned also with a gold medal.
Spain’s light welterweight (63kg) No.1 Adrian Thiam has been preparing to the EUBC European U22 Boxing Championships and celebrated his return with a tournament title after beating United States’ Charles Sheehy in the final. The fourth Spanish gold medal of the Boxam Tournament was achieved by Miguel Cuadrado who demonstrated his power against France’s Moreno Fendero in the final of the middleweight (75kg).
Gazimagomed Jalidov was born in Russia but he has been representing Spain in the international stage since 2018. The strong boxer defeated Alessio Di Fiore in the final of the light heavyweight (81kg) in Castellon de la Plana. Spain’s world class heavyweight (91kg) boxer, the ex-Cuban Emmanuel Reyes controlled all of the three rounds against Italy’s Gabriele Maria Casella and won the six gold medal for the host country.
United States’ Richard Torrez Jr. was bronze medallist at the St. Petersburg 2016 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships at the age of 17. He won the 2018 Chemistry Cup in Germany and he is currently one of the best super heavyweight (+91kg) boxers in the world. The US teenager demonstrated his power once again and following his excellent first round, his Spanish opponent, Ayoub Ghadfa Drissi abandoned the final in the second.
