The 2013 Mediterranean Games (Turkish: 2013 Akdeniz Oyunları), officially known as the XVII Mediterranean Games (XVII Akdeniz Oyunları), is underway in Mersin, the second Tukish city after Izmir to Host an edition of this Multi-Sport Competition.
The Mersin 2013 Boxing Tournament took place between 21 June and 26 June at the Toroslar Sports Hall. 80 Athletes, coming from 24 nations of the Mediterranean basin, competed in the traditional 10 Weight Categories.
The Algerian Boxing team got before the rest of the competitors in the final medal standing. Its boxers, lead by WSB Italia Thunder 81 Kg Athlete Abdelhafid BENCHABLA, got 5 gold medals and a bronze one. Italy was the runner-up. The italian boxers conquered 7 medals (2 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze). The tri-olympic medalist Roberto Cammarelle, beating-up the Home Champion Alì Demerezen in the SuperHeavyWeight Final bout, completed an outstanding Hat – Trick. The Azzurri’s Captain had already won the gold in the last two edition of the Mediterranean Games: Almeria 2005 and Pescara 2009.
The new hope of Italian Boxing, Fabio Turchi, did his best in the heavyweight tournament. The silver medal at 2010 Youth Olympic Games prevailed in the Heavyweight final match, defeating 3-0 the crotian boxer Josip Bepi Filipi.
The Home team (Turkey) got the third place thanks to 1 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze. The only Turkish boxers to reach the highest step of the podium was Adem Kilicci who won hands down the Middle weight final bout against the Egyptian Hosam Abdin (3-0).
