The 71st edition of the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament continued with another marathon program in the historic city of Eger. Canada’s new youth sensation Mathieu Wilkens and Georgia’s Mamuka Sartania won difficult contests in the second day of boxing in Hungary.
The new 71st edition is running in Eger this week and 224 boxers are fighting for the titles. The Technical Delegate of the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament is Mr. Viorel Sima of Romania. The competition is taking place in the women’s youth, women’s junior, men’s youth and men’s junior age groups.
The boxers, who were born in 2004 and in 2005, will be eligible to attend in the youth age group and the event is one of the top preparations for the upcoming 2022 IBA Youth World Boxing Championships. The younger 2006-2007 born junior boxers can compete for 26 titles in the upcoming Bornemissza Memorial Tournament.
The longest competition day with 48 contests is on the schedule of the 71st Bornemissza Memorial Tournament on Day3.
The bout of the day
Kazakhstan arrived to the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament with a strong youth team with many of their stars on the board. Bazar Sagyndyk is their new light middleweight (71kg) hope in the national team who worked hard in the recent months to be selected to this competition. The Kazakh boxer met one of the best Hungarian youth boxers, Levente Gemes who earned a bronze medal at the 2021 EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships. The Hungarian landed strong punches in the first round and after that moment, Sagyndyk increased his tempo to catch Gemes in the second. The Hungarian was not able to share his power this time and the Kazakh marched to the next stage of boxing in Eger.
The surprise of the day
Ukraine’s Maksym Naumov claimed a bronze medal at the 2019 EUBC European Schoolboys Boxing Championships in Tbilisi and he returned to Georgia last July to bring back another bronze from the junior continental event. The Ukrainian talent moved up to the youth age group and he arrived to Eger as one of the stars of the middleweight (75kg). Naumov was the favourite against Canada’s Mathieu Wilkens but his rival surprised him in this contest. The Canadian had the brave attempt to beat the more experienced Ukrainian and he succeeded in Eger causing the main surprise of the day.
The Round-Up
Niamh Mitchell achieved her first Scottish national title in 2020 and she joined the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament which is her first huge international event. The Scottish girl attends at the junior light bantamweight (52kg) in Eger where she opened the first round with energetic shots against Romania’s Ionela Mihaela Eremia. Mitchell was in different level than her Romanian rival and she won this contest unanimously proving her excellent fighting skills in Eger.
Finland’s Leevi Salo was member of their team at the 2021 EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships in Tbilisi and he is still in the junior age group with strong experiences. The Finnish featherweight (57kg) boxer had a tough rival in the second competition day, Scotland’s Luca Flynn who had also great pedigree before their contest. The Scottish boxer was not only competitive in this contest but landed effective punches in all of the three rounds therefore Salo had to do his very best to beat Flynn in this outstanding bout.
Georgia’s Mamuka Sartania was bronze medallist at the 2021 EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships in Tbilisi and he spends his second year among the junior boxers. The 16-year-old talent moved up from the light welterweight (63kg) to the welterweight (66kg) and he is using the Bornemissza Memorial Tournament as preparation for the next EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships. He had a strong Hungarian rival in the second competition day, Szebasztian Budai who approved the rhythm of the Georgian boxer in the first round. Sartania received the best advice in the first break and from the second round, he worked hard to beat to the local boy.
Hungary’s Krisztian Nileborg is their best junior boxer in the national team who won all of his contests in the previous nearly one year and spent short time in his debuting bout in Eger. The 16-year-old Hungarian stopped Albert Bartok in the first round and advanced to the next stage at the light middleweight (70kg). Another strong Hungarian, EUBC European Junior Champion Olah Levente, who joined to the youth age group this January, also won his contest quickly, Aron Balkovics abandoned their contest.
