Will the boxer or the brawler prevail in a Light Heavyweight Sofia shootout?05 June 2015
Light heavyweight (81 kg) is one of the strongest weight classes in AIBA Pro Boxing (APB), and two crucial Cycle I Round 1 matches from the division will take place on Saturday night from Sofia, Bulgaria, and live at https://www.youtube.com/user/AIBAproboxingTV.
2014 Commonwealth Games silver medalist Kennedy St Pierre reached the light heavyweight Inaugural World Title Match after knocking out European Champion Nikita Ivanov, but failed to win the APB belt after losing to Ehsan Rouzbahani.
The Mauritian athlete will look to return to winning ways in Sofia, yet he will have to defeat home favourite Spas Genov in the process.
Genov is one of Bulgaria’s most successful boxers, and has already defeated both Dzemal Bosnjak and Oybek Mamazulunov in the competition.
Although Genov lost to Joseph Ward in his last contest, his busy style suits the APB format, with his former professional boxing experience a huge asset.
St Pierre is an elegant boxer to watch when he is at full confidence, but will he feel relaxed in the ring after losing three of his first four APB matches?
If the 22-year-old can replicate the form that knocked out Ivanov against Genov, he could make the watching audience in Sofia quieten quicky.
Genov also carries power in both hands however, which means we may not see the completion of the eight scheduled rounds.
The winner of the St Pierre/Genov clash will meet either Mathieu Bauderlique or Joseph Ward in Cycle I Round 2.
Bauderlique is one of the most well-rounded athletes in APB with experience in many different boxing competitions, while Ward is a highly regarded boxer who is on a three fight winning streak in this competition.
Two more light heavyweight matches will take place in a fortnight in Guiyang, China.
20:30: Mathieu BAUDERLIQUE (FRA) vs Joseph WARD (IRL)
21:00: Kennedy ST PIERRE (MRI) vs Spas GENOV (BUL)
