WSB Welcomes Moroccan Franchise to Season V

The North African country will enter a team for the latest installment of World Series of Boxing.
For the fifth season of the World Series of Boxing, Algeria will no longer be the only nation representing the vast African continent. Neighboring Morocco has indeed decided to create a team and aims at competing at the highest possible level against world-class opposition.
Similar to Algeria, Morocco possesses a rich and longstanding boxing tradition and their participation will no doubt come as welcome news to WSB fans.
Morocco has won three Olympic Games medals in their history, with the first of these coming at Seoul in 1998 when Abdelhak Achik claimed bronze. The same medal was placed around the neck of Mohamed Achik at Barcelona 1992 and that of Taher Tamsamani at Sydney 2000. As well as these the Arab country also boasts two bronze medals at the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
It is still too early to say which boxers will be recruited by the newly-formed franchise, as the national team has just returned from Cuba where it took part in the prestigious Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament along with over a hundred boxers from nineteen different countries.
Amongst the twelve Moroccan boxers who competed, the stand-out display came from light welterweight (64kg) Hamza El Barbari, who won silver after narrowly losing to Cuban Luis Oliva in the final whilst another remarkable result was achieved by Mohammed Rabil (69kg), who eventually lost in his semi-final bout against Chilean Daniel Munoz, claiming bronze.
The future coaches of the franchise will certainly also pay close attention to Mohammed Arjaoui and Nordine Samoudi. The former has already participated in WSB during its first three seasons as part of the British Lionhearts’ franchise with whom he compiled a record of three wins against four defeats in the heavyweight (91kg) division. In WSB Season IV, Samoudi (75kg) took to the ring with the Algeria Desert Hawks, losing his sole bout.
What is certain is that Morocco will do its utmost to position itself at the helm of world boxing, and who knows, there might even be a local derby between Morocco and Algeria!

Pour la cinquième saison du World Series of Boxing, l’Algérie ne sera plus la seule nation à représenter l’immense continent africain. En effet, son voisin le Maroc, a décidé de créer une équipe et n’entend pas faire de la figuration face à une concurrence mondiale de haut niveau.
Comme l’Algérie, le Maroc a une belle et vieille tradition pugilistique qui ravira les fans de la WSB. Les marocains ont gagné trois médailles olympiques au cours de leur histoire. La première aux Jeux Olympiques à Séoul 1988. Le boxeur Abdelhak Achik y avait obtenu le bronze. Le même métal avait terminé au cou de Mohamed Achik à Barcelone 1992 et à Taher Tamsamani à Sydney 2000. Le pays du Nord de l’Afrique peux également être fier d’avoir gagné deux médailles de bronze aux AIBA Championnats du Monde de boxe.
Il est encore trop tôt pour dire quels boxeurs seront engagés dans la nouvelle équipe, puisque l’équipe nationale vient juste de rentrer de Cuba où elle a participé au prestigieux tournoi Giraldo Córdova Cardín. Plus de cent boxeurs de dix-neuf pays ont participé à l’événement. Parmi les douze boxeurs marocains qui ont participé, il convient de souligner la performance de Hamza el Barbari qui a obtenu la médaille d’argent face au cubain Luis Oliva. Autre résultat remarquable avec Mohamed Rabi qui s’est finalement incliné en demi-finale face au chilien Daniel Munoz.
Les futurs entraîneurs de la franchise ne manqueront certainement pas de s’intéresser de près à Mohammed Arjaoui et Nordine Samoudi. Le premier a déjà participé au WSB lors des trois premières saisons avec les British Lionhearts. Il a obtenu trois victoires pour quatre défaites. La saison dernière, Samoudi a participé avec les Algeria Desert Hawks, perdant lors de son unique apparition
Ce qui est d’ores et déjà certain, est que le Maroc se battra à fond pour se positionner au sommet de la boxe mondiale, et qui sait, les fans de la WSB, auront peut-être loisir de vivre un joli derby entre le Maroc et l’Algérie.
