WSBV Day 12 Citron

Jeyvier Cintron Ocasio has been one of the most exciting boxers in Season V of the World Series of Boxing (WSB), and the 5-1 Puerto Rico Hurricanes boxer is currently second in the Flyweight (52 kg) rankings.

The Puerto Rican fighter is the latest WSB Boxer of the Week after defeating Olzhas Sattibayev in San Juan, and he has been one of the best competitors for his Franchise who are in their first season of WSB competition.

That result kept him second in the Flyweight rankings, six points behind Cuba’s Yosbany Veitia, but crucially two points ahead of third placed Moroccan Achraf Kharroubi.

Two Olympic quotas are available from this weight class, and if Cintron Ocasio wins his last Regular Season match next week he could reach his second Olympic Games after reaching the quarter-finals of London 2012 aged just 18.

Powerful for the weight, the Hurricane has also defeated Cristian Alan Choque Chambi, Eduard Johan Bermúdez Salas, Elvin Mamishzada and Francesco Barotti this season, while his lone defeat was to Hamza Touba in Poland.

After his excellent performance at home against Sattibayev, the Boxer of the Week spoke to WSB about his career, and hopes for the future.

First of all, congratulations for your amazing season so far. What are your thoughts about your first experience in WSB?

To be honest, at the beginning I didn’t like it because I didn’t see myself fighting five rounds. But now I’m a WSB member and I’m very grateful. I’m having an amazing experience.

With a 5-1 record you are in second place of the Flyweight 52 kg rankings. How do you see the Olympic Qualification going? Do you think that it is possible through WSB?

I feel that it is nearly a reality and I am keeping myself positive to reach this goal.

You will go to USA and will probably fight against the fourth ranked Brent Venegas III in the last week of the Regular Season. Winning this bout could give you your Olympic quota. How important is the fight?

I will treat this fight like all the other ones. I follow the same work plan because I trust in all that we are doing until now.

Do you think that the support of the USA fans could make you nervous?

Yes, I think so. The fans always go with the locals, but in Miami there are a lot of Hispanics and I feel that I will also have my fans there.

Puerto Rico Hurricanes started the competition in good shape with two consecutive wins against Poland and Argentina. But after their two last defeats, the team is fifth and out of the Play-Offs. What is the overall goal of the team?

We are a young team, with little experience and made up mainly by debutants and without many reinforcements. I think that the work has been excellent and my teammates and coaches are committed.

The team did not achieve good results against powerful opponents such as Astana Arlans Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan Baku Fires. What do you think that Puerto Rico needs to win the big matches?

We need more reinforcements and alternatives in the weight classes that don’t abound in Puerto Rico.

You come from a family that breathes boxing. Your father, Javier Cintrón, was a famous boxer. Is this an extra pressure or an incentive?

It is an incentive for me because it inspires me to reach where he didn’t reach.

What are your goals for this Season?

Definitely to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Which boxer (active or inactive) have you always wanted to box against?

I would like to fight the London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medalist Misha Aloian.

If you don’t follow the family tradition on the ring, what would you have been?

Physical Therapist.
