British Lionhearts maintained their home undefeated record in the World Series of Boxing (WSB) to shake off two away losses in a row against Algeria Desert Hawks, who remain winless this season.

The 4-1 victory was well deserved for the European Franchise who are looking virtually unbeatable at London’s legendary York Hall.

An evening of British triumph began at Flyweight (52 kg) where European bronze medalist Jack Bateson won his opening match of the season against 0-2 Abdelhakim El Barka who lost every round of the match.

Algeria evened up the scoring after the second fight of the night, as Lightweight (60 kg) Reda Benbaziz improved his WSB record to 1-1 by completely outclassing Bulgaria’s two-time European Championships silver medalist and 2009 AIBA World Championships gold medalist Detelin Dalakliev.

British Welterweight (69 kg) Haizel Ekow Tabiri-Essuman extended his WSB record to 2-0 against Sofiane Tabi, but was forced to work hard during every moment of the match against his tough African rival.

Nabil Kassel did not make the trip to London, which meant that British Light heavyweight (81 kg) John Newell won the fight via walkover, and established an unassailable 3-1 lead for the Lionhearts.

Super heavyweight (91+ kg) Joseph Joyce has been one of the early stars of Season V, and displayed his frightening power with his second stoppage win in a row against Algeria’s Mohamed Grimes in the third round of their fight.

After their comfortable 4-1 victory, British Lionhearts are away next week against Russian Boxing Team, while Algeria Desert Hawks continue their mission for a first win of the season at home to Ukraine Otamans.
