#WSBV Day 9 British Lionhearts offer support to the London community with the Hammersmith Boxing Academy04 April 2017
World Series of Boxing (WSB) Franchise British Lionhearts took part in a community engagement day on Wednesday 11th March 2015 in association with the Hammersmith Boxing Academy.
Hammersmith’s Lyric Square in West London was the venue for the event where fans could mix and mingle with the Lionhearts team.
British stars such as AIBA World Championships bronze medalist Anthony Fowler and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Samuel Maxwell offered words of encouragement and photo opportunities for all involved.
Aspiring boxers from the Hammersmith Boxing Academy delighted the watching public with padwork and demonstrations, while the interest from the spectators was so high that eager members of the public volunteered to be taught some boxing basics.
The friendly and talented students from the innovative Academy study a sports academic program for 30 hours a week, with ten of those hours solely dedicated to the sport of boxing.
Other subjects include nutritional and gym instruction courses which give the participants a complete and well rounded understanding of the sports business.
Aged between 16 and 19, graduates will aim to eventually start a career in the world of boxing, whether as coaches, athletes, or via other areas of the sport.
Richard Powers from England Boxing, one of the key components regarding the success of the event expressed his delight afterwards.
“It was great to see the WSB and the British Lionhearts working with a local London boxing club. The students worked hard, and when the Lionhearts came along their faces all
lit up, and they were happy to see elite athletes take the time to talk to everybody.
“They worked with the Hammersmith Boxing Academy students, and gave them inspirational talks on boxing and the future of the students.
“It was great to see the Lionhearts working with a local London boxing club. Overall it was an excellent event and we are looking forward to doing the next one,” said Powers.
This event also showcased as a face-off preview for the WSB Group A match between British Lionhearts and Ukraine Otamans which takes place tonight at London’s York Hall, and will be airing at AIBABoxingTV.com and on British television channel ESPN from 8pm GMT.
