Zhonglin Wu and Patrick Lourenco aim for Light Flyweight redemption in China

10 July 2015 News

Two important AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) Cycle I Round 2 Light Flyweight (49 kg) matches take place on Saturday night in Guiyang, China, and both can be viewed live and free from 19:00 (GMT +8) at https://www.youtube.com/user/AIBAproboxingTV.

Home favourite Zhonglin Wu competes in the main event against Patrick Lourenco (BRA), eager to banish the bad memories of defeat to Carlos Quipo (ECU) in Cycle I Round 1.

Wu had previously fought for the APB Light Flyweight title in a losing effort against Champion Bin LV, and needs a win over his talented Brazilian opponent to move back up the rankings.

The 22-year-old Lourenco boasts an all-attacking style which has thrilled audiences all over the world, but he too lost in the last round to AIBA World Champion Birzhan Zhakypov (KAZ), which makes victory over Wu a vital task to achieve.

This will be a rematch from the very first week of APB in the pre ranking phase of Light Flyweight APB bouts, and Wu will be confident heading into it having won their inaugural meeting via split decision.

Lourenco did win the first round of that contest, before Wu’s tactical prowess paid dividends in the closing stages.

Their second match will take place over eight rounds instead of the initial six, which will test the stamina of both boxers across the added distance.

The passionate Chinese fans are expected to cheer Wu ardently in the contest, and he will hope to beat Lourenco to the punch regularly in order to keep the decibel level high throughout.

2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Fazil Juma Kaggwa (UGA) competes in the second match of the evening against debuting 2015 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Kornelis Kwangu Langu.
