Newsletter EUBC by President Franco Falcinelli – July 2018
19 July 2018Dear Boxing Friends,
In July, the boxing activities of EUBC family continues in Germany, Serbia and Ukraine with men’s and women’s Tournaments.
With The Star of the Ring and The Voice from the Corner, EUBC gives voice to European best boxers and to the coaches of the European national teams. Periodically, on EUBC website and socials, publishes their interviews to learn more about the habits, the history, the life of those in each League and/or tournament undertake trying to get the best result in sports.
The voice of the corner
With the project “The voice from the corner” will also require technical reports on specific aspects of the methodology of athletic and technical training. And then, it can open the debate on the various technical reports.
MEDITERRANEAN GAMES 2018 (TARRAGONA – SPAIN)
Some history and numbers
Boxing was admitted at the Mediterranean Games already in the first edition of the games in 1951 in the city of Alexandria (Egypt).
Have just been completed the XVIII Mediterranean Games which, from 22 June to 1 July 2018, were held in Tarragona, Catalonia (Spain).
The lights turns on Boxing from 25 to 30 June.
Boxing matches took place in the town of Torredembarra Pavilion which is a coastal town and municipality in the region of Tarragona.
In the Games took part 99 elite boxers (males) representing 19 countries.
9 weights in the competitions: 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, 64 kg, 69 kg, 75 kg, 81 kg, 91 kg , +91 kg. In total 89 matches were played.
The matches were held on a regular basis. The statistics report:
- almost all of the boxers won on points WP (93.26%);
- 3 won for RSC-I (3.37%);
- 1 won by KO (1.12%);
- 1 won for ABD (1.12%);
- 1 won for WO (1.12%).
About this international competition, the EUBC President Franco Falcinelli highlighted three main points:
1) the high number of injuries in this competition
2) absurd impediment to the women’s involvement
3) the competition not in full respect of AIBA Rules
On the first point we need once again put in evidence that the prevention of the injuries is upon the ability of the coaches to teach the technical and tactic defense and the rigourous attitude of the Referees which have to give more “Warning” and “Disqualification” toward boxers incorrect and fouled.
The second point regards the lack respect of the “Equality Gender” always desired by IOC.
It is unacceptale that LOC Chairman Mr Amar Addadi didn’t answer to our request. We asked at least to include the Olympic Women Categories.
The third point is still more hard to accept. The LOC didn’t respect the AIBA rules related to the number of ITOs and the right qualification of RR/JJes.
This kind of attitude forced AIBA to consider this Regional event no more at the same level of the past editions. Consequently, we have to consider the “Mediterranean Games” like an AIBA “B Tournament”. Without any technical value for the participants boxers.
EC AIBA MEETING (ABU DHABI – UNITED ARABIC EMIRATES)
On 12 and 13 of July the AIBA EC Meeting will be held in Abu Dhabi, the beautiful city of United Arab Emirates.
This is a very important session because AIBA will show to the upcoming IOC Session – 19-20 July- that all requests have been carefully evaluated and corrected following the expectations of IOC.
The topic of the next Ordinary Congress will be discussed and, of course, all technical and organizational issues will be analysed in order to reach properly Tokyo 2020 and giving to our National Federations the right line to schedule their Olympic programs.
INTERNATIONAL BOXING DAY ( 21-22 JULY 2018, MOSCOW – RUSSIA)
It is a very important event promoted by Russian Boxing Federation. It is an excellent way to promote boxing and to involve in our sport the main Institutions of the Country in order to regain credibility, dignity and popularity.
I hope that the “International Boxing Day” will be celebrated by all National Boxing Federations in the near future, because it is a strong address to reconfirm our vitality and our will to continue our mission in favor of the affirmation of our social and sport values of boxing.
61° FESTIVAL DEI 2 MONDI (SPOLETO, ITALY)
As President of the EUBC I have been invited from Italian Olympic Committee to take part at the celebration of the “50 Years of Anniversary Mexico 68” at the “Festival dei due Mondi”. It has been a very pleasant event to relive an historical edition of Olympic Games.
The 1968 XIX Summer Olympics were the first Olympics Game to be staged in Latin America.
The 1968 O.G. was an extraordinary year not only for the Olympic Games in Mexico but also because they were correlated to the “Mexican Student Movement of 1968” and the government’s repression that caused many victims ten days before the “opening ceremony”.
Other important events that characterized the XIX Olympics:
- In the medal award ceremony the black American Tommy Smith and John Carlos took a stand for civil rights by raising their black-gloved fists and wearing black socks in lieu of shoes
- The American (and future professional world’s champion) George Foreman won the gold medal by defeating Soviet Jonas Chepulis.
- The third Olympic medal for Soviet boxer Boris Lagutin
- The world record in “long jump” by Bob Beamon and in the “Triple Jump” by Viktor Sanaeev
- Dick Fosbury in the “high jump” using his unconventional “Fosbury flop tecnique”.
- George Foreman (Heavyweight gold medal at Mexico City Olympic Games 1968)
- Boris Lagutin (Super welterweight gold medal at Mexico City Olympic Games 1968)
- Franco Falcinelli (EUBC President) with Eddy Ottoz (hurdler – bronze medal at Mexico City Olympic Games 1968)
