Ukraine’s Dmytro Molodan had a fantastic success in the semi-finals of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament13 March 2020
The semi-finals were held in the 15th edition of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament in Vilnius, Lithuania on the fourth competition day. Ukraine’s Dmytro Molodan is an experienced boxer already but he had to do his very best to beat India’s Ankit in the bout of the day. Poland’s Jakub Straszewski, Estonia’s Matvey Starikov and Lithuania’s Aleksandr Trofimcuk all advanced to the final of the event with excellent successes on Day4.
The new edition of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament is one of the preparation events for the upcoming EUBC European Youth Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Budva, Montenegro from April 23. Boxers who were born in 2002 and in 2003 are eligible to attend in the new Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament. The Technical Delegate of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament is Mr. Dragoljub Radovic of Serbia.
The competition was named after Lithuania’s national boxing hero Danas Pozniakas who claimed gold medal at the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games representing the Soviet Union and also crowned three-times in the history of the European Boxing Championships. During his long and successful career Lithuanian boxing icon Danas Pozniakas won 203 bouts out of his 217 total contests in the ’60s.
The bout of the day
Ukraine’s Dmytro Molodan achieved silver medal in the 2019 EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships in Galati, Romania. He joined to the youth competitions this January and competes at the flyweight (52kg) in the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament. The Ukrainian boxer is only 16 but he had more than 100 bouts already during his career since 2013. Molodan had to meet with his main rival in Vilnius and India’s Ankit was a competitive rival for him as expected. The Ukrainian has done a great finish and eliminated his tough Indian opponent which means he can meet for the gold with his teammate Maksym Horodniuk.
The surprise of the day
Poland’s Jakub Straszewski attended at the 2018 and 2019 editions of the EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships but on both events he lost in the first preliminary round. The Polish boxer exceeded all of the previous expectations with his success over India’s Sourav Yadav at the heavyweight (91kg). The Polish talent will be meeting for the title of the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament with Ukraine’s Ashot Kocharyan who bowed out Lithuania’s Irvydas Uksas.
Estonia’s best boxer in the age group Matvey Starikov attended in high number of international events already in spite of the fact that he was born only in 2003. He came from a boxing family as his father Albert was his Baltic nation’s most successful boxer in the ‘90s and competed also in the AIBA World Boxing Championships. Starikov eliminated Scotland’s Gerard McTaggart and continued his winning path against Lithuania’s Armandas Bielskus in the semi-finals of the lightweight (60kg). The Estonian talent will be facing for the gold with India’s Akash Gorkha who eliminated Kyrgyzstan’s Yerbol Asandyrov.
Czech Republic’s Erik Suchy caused a big surprise in the quarter-finals when he bowed out Lithuania’s experienced Nedas Gudomskas at the light welterweight (64kg). The Czech boxer controlled all of the rounds against another Lithuanian boxer Domas Valentinavicius and advanced to the final of the competition. The Czech boxer will be meeting for the gold medal with India’s Youth National Champion Ajay Kumar who defeated Poland’s Oliwer Zamojski in an exciting semi-final.
Lithuania’s EUBC European Junior Boxing Championships silver medallist Aleksandr Trofimcuk moved down to the welterweight (69kg) and opened with a narrow success in the Danas Pozniakas Youth Tournament. The 18-year-old Lithuanian had a fantastic battle against India’s Youth National Championships silver medallist Sumit in the semi-finals. Trofimcuk won his second tight bout and can prepare to his final against Ukraine’s EUBC European Youth Champion Yuriy Zakhareyev who stopped Lithuania’s Emilis Sileris in a quick semi-final.
