WSB 2013-14 Spotlight on: The Mexico Guerreros06 November 2013
Despite being drawn in the “Group of Death” the Mexico Guerreros must still be considered one of the major contenders this year after a stunning performance in Season III, which saw them reach the semi-finals, where it took the eventual champions Astana Arlans Kazakhstan to knock them out of the competition.
This year they will be facing the Arlans in the group stage, along with new boys the Cuban Domadores the ever resilient Hussars Poland and the enigma that is Team Russia. WSB bad boys the Baku Fires will be the last team in the group, which will make it quite a phenomenal season for the Guerreros, who will need to be at their best from day one.
As a boxing obsessed country with a heritage dating back more than 100 years, Mexico is famous for producing world class boxers who retain the same hard-working spirit in the ring, that they used to forge themselves as athletes. Disciplined, proud and focused, Mexico’s boxers have gained a global reputation for excellence, often in spite of starting off with very difficult backgrounds.
Last season in an obvious difference to almost every other team save the finalists, the Guerreros had boxers ranked in the top ten for every weight category. Given the numerous examples of individual brilliance, the team will be a serious threat to both Cuba and Kazakhstan in their Group B battles next season. Moreover their match with the WSB bad boys the Azerbaijan Baku Fires could be one of the most important in determining the shape of the whole group.
The Guerreros will open the season in the ultra-modern and super impressive Domo Plan Arena with a capacity of four thousand people. The arena is located in the heart of Mexico City, in the Miguel Hidalgo quarter. The venue is famous for hosting numerous international sports, fashion and entertainment events. The venue has been made available in collaboration with the Mexico City Sports Institute, which is headed by Mr Horacio de la Vega and Mr Miguel Hidalgo. This is also another sign of the tremendous support that the WSB has received from the Mexican Ministry of Sport, The Mexican Olympic Committee and the Government of Mexico City, for which we are extremely grateful.
Following their success in the third season this season Mexico Guerreros will be staging weigh-in events at the city’s most significant landmarks.
Elias Emigdio, who was recently awarded the WSB Best Boxer of the Year at the AIBA Awards Ceremony 2013, spills the beans on how his team are preparing for next season.
First of all congratulation for the Award of WSB Best Boxer of the Year. How do you feel about this award and what does it mean to you?
I am pleased to receive this award. It is a very important step in my career.
Tell us about the Mexico Guerreros squad for this Season.
We will have a couple of new international reinforcements. The team is very excited to start this 4th season. We are a powerful team because we follow our hearts in battle and give everything we have in the ring.
This will be your 4th season in the WSB, you are a now veteran of the competition. Do you still feel excited when the new season starts?
I´m always excited to start a new season, but this year it will be even better and more competitive than before. I’m training very hard to keep my performance at an optimal level.
What is your view on the 10 weight categories?
It is a very good move for the league. This will make the tournament even more competitive in each of the categories. There were boxing stars who could not compete in past seasons, but surely we´ll now see them in action this new season.
What is the atmosphere in the team just a few weeks away from the Season’s Launch?
All the members of the team want to fight. Nobody wants to miss out on the tournament! We just returned from a World Championships and that gave us extra experience and confidence to compete in the WSB.
What are the lessons that Mexico Guerreros team learned in the Season III?
We fought with the best boxers last season and this of course brought us benefits, we qualified to the semi-finals. That give us a great confidence and now other teams know that the Guerreros are excellent fighters and they should be careful.
What are Mexico Guerreros objectives for this season?
We want to get to the WSB Finals. We will fight for the WSB Trophy this year.
